Back at school, Greta would maintain a dizzying schedule. From the fall of 2018 through 2019, she continued to lead her Friday strikes while accepting invitations and reaching out to those equipped to help her cause. Traveling with her parents through Europe on weekends and holidays in an electric vehicle, Greta addressed the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poland in December 2018, and the World Economic Forum in Switzerland in January, along with the British, French, and European parliaments in the following months. By springtime, her request for a meeting with Pope Francis was granted. The Vatican would later call Greta “a great witness to what the Church teaches on the care of the environment and the care of the person.”15

With every tweet, post, and speech, momentum grew. Her impact was global. Public opinion among young Americans was changing in demonstrable ways. Over the last decade, increasing support for bold government solutions to curb climate change coincided with the December 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change, Trump’s decision to withdraw from the accord in 2017, and then again during Greta’s constant campaign and global call for action.

Captivated, politicians around the world were taking notice of Greta, our climate, and the resilience and power of Generation Z.

French president Emmanuel Macron remarked, “When you are a leader and every week you have young people demonstrating with such a message, you cannot remain neutral. They helped me change.”16
